California and Placer County’s child support guidelines provide a “baseline” amount of monthly child support by looking at each parent’s income and the amount of time they spend with the children. However, other expenses can be added onto this baseline amount. These “add on expenses” can be mandatory or discretionary according to California’s Family Law Code § 4062. Mandatory expenses include things such as reasonable health care expenses for the child, whereas discretionary expenses include educational costs related to extracurricular activities. Add on expenses can represent a considerable amount of money, depending on the circumstances, so parents should work closely with an attorney so they do not end up paying more (or receiving less) child support than is required.
