California and Placer County have standardized the process of awarding child support by creating guidelines. The guidelines contain a formula which looks at certain factors–each parent’s income, how much time each parent spends with the children, and the number of children supported. Calculators exist where you can plug in your information and obtain a rough amount. However, the formula is only the beginning. A judge will also consider hardship deductions and add on expenses before arriving at a final amount. The guidelines are not set in stone, so parents should retain a lawyer’s assistance when arguing over child support.
