In California and Placer County, someone under age 18 can gain many of the legal rights and responsibilities of adulthood by becoming emancipated. A minor can become emancipated in one of several ways, such as getting married or petitioning a court. Once emancipated, a person can enter contracts, enroll in a school of their choice, and make their own medical decisions without parental consent. However, even emancipated minors cannot vote or purchase alcohol. Many child stars in Hollywood have sought emancipation because it makes the process of finding work easier, but even non-celebrity minors might want to obtain emancipation.
