When a couple in Placer County and throughout California divorces, one might pay spousal support to the other spouse. Temporary spousal support lasts for the duration of the divorce (which, if contested, could take years). Permanent alimony can be awarded in the divorce decree. “Permanent” alimony rarely lasts forever, though, so the name is a little misleading; instead, it might last for a term of years or until modified. Unless a couple agrees to spousal support, a judge will order it only after considering many factors, such as the marital standard of living, the duration of the marriage, and other factors.
